Pusha-T ‘Heir’ App Rewards Hip-Hop Fans and Artists on Their Own Terms

written by Jamara

A trapper turned rapper can’t morph into us… but a trapper turned rapper can morph into Puff!

G.O.O.D. Music president and emcee, Pusha-T, took to Twitter to announce his latest business move with the app, heir, a direct-to-consumer experience for an authentic surfacing of hip-hop tracks.

In the app, fans stream music and vote if it’s hot or not. If a song someone upvotes becomes a top-ranked track among all users, that user and the artist of the song will receive a digital currency known as “Crown.” If a track a user upvotes doesn’t become popular among all users, that user will also lose Crown. When a user saves up their Crown, they have the opportunity to cash out for real money or other awards. For fans, they can use their Crown to get early or exclusive access to an artist’s concert or record release. For artists, they can use their Crown to gain the attention of tastemakers or artists for feedback on a track.

Due to his background in the music industry, Pusha-T, born Terrence Thornton, is listed as ‘The Culture.’ Alongside him are a team of 3 other creatives who helped create the app. According to heir’s website, the squad includes Summer Watson, ‘The Business’ of the app as the woman who’s worked in product, content, and marketing at top consumer tech startups like TuneIn, Pocket Gems, and Playdom (which she sold to Disney for $763 million). Before these moves, Watson was a DJ, artists manager, and early employee at a top indie hip-hop label in Oakland. Max Batt is ‘The Design’ of heir as he had a hand in cutting-edge products and brands such as Mercedes-Benz R&D and Ammunition and Lynette Perkins is ‘The Tech,’ as she engineered products for Home Away, Charity Miles, and Hewlett-Packard. Advisors on heir include A&R executives Steven Victor of Def Jam Records and Joey Arbagey of Epic Records.

Those interested in heir can sign up here to receive an invite for early access to download the app.
